Cathy Landry’10 wins top prize in Sister Cities’ International Young Author Showcase

Phoenix, AZ – Sister Cities International Young Authors Showcase announced recently that Phoenix youth Cathy Landry was awarded top honors for her poem “Diplomacy in E-Minor.”

Landry, 17 years old and entering her senior year at Xavier College Prep Academy, competed against youth from around the world who submitted essays and poetry that expressed the Sister Cities International’s mission to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding and cooperation.

Landry was awarded $1,200, and her poem will be published on the Sister Cities International Web site, in the Sister Cities International Newsletter and be part of the Young Artists Showcase Tour.

Sister Cities International, as the national nonprofit membership organization serving members in the United States, acts as a clearinghouse and facilitator to assist communities with the development and maintenance of their sister city partnerships.

The city of Phoenix joined the Sister City movement in 1972 with the creation of the Phoenix Sister Cities Commission (PSCC). As a nonprofit organization seeking to develop understanding and better relationships with designated cities around the world, PSCC filed for Articles of Incorporation in 1975 and signed its first sister city linkage with Hermosillo, Mexico in 1976.

Since then, Phoenix has linked with Himeji, Japan (1976); Taipei, Taiwan (1979); Chengdu, China (1987); Ennis, Ireland (1988); Grenoble, France (1990); Calgary, Canada (1997); Catania, Italy (2001); Ramat-Gan, Israel (2005); and established a Capital Cities agreement with Prague, Czech Republic in 1991.

Brophy Grad remembers Emily Ell

Ten years ago this May, the Xavier community suffered a crushing loss when Emily Elizabeth Ell '99 was killed on prom night, just a few weeks before her graduation, when the car in which she was traveling was struck by another. The week after her funeral, Seamus O'Bryan, Peter O'Dowd and Nick Staab, all Brophy Class of 1999, constructed a wooden cross and placed it in the front courtyard of Xavier in honor of Emily and the beautiful spirit in which she led her life.

To mark this ten-year anniversary, Seamus rebuilt Emily's cross with the help of Emily's parents, Suzanne and Terry Ell. On May 20, 2009, Mr. Bert O'Bryan and Mr. Joe Beringer, along with Mr. and Mrs. Ell, replaced the cross and Sister Joan Fitzgerald offered a blessing.

"I am surprised that the original cross held up in the sun for as long as it did," said Seamus. "This new redwood cross will be a much stronger replacement, and it has always meant a lot to us to remember our friend in this way."

Faculty, staff, students, parents, alumnae and friends of Xavier remember Emily always, and offer our thoughts and prayers to the Ell family.

Join the Team! Xavier Legacy & the Get Fit Challenge!

Envison this, it's Sunday morning, January 17, 2010 in Phoenix, Arizona. Thousands of people have gathered downtown at the starting line for the PF Chang's Rock and Roll 1/2 marathon and full marathon.

Among them....a team of gators who have all joined together to not only run the race, but to run it for the legacy of the plaid. Gators can run in honor of whomever made Xavier a legacy for them- maybe it was a teacher, maybe one of the sisters, their parents who paid tuition for them all those years, or perhaps they just want to run in honor of a friend. Regardless, we will all be running together to honor the fact that Xavier isn't just a school and we will be running into the future to help support the sisters in building Founder's Hall, a physical symbol of all those who have made Xavier X-cellent :)

The goal is to have at least 66 alumnae, parents, and Xavier family join the team, in honor of the 66 years that Xavier has been providing excellence in education to young women in Arizona and in honor of all the people who have made that possible. Team members in this challenge will commit to raising a goal of $1,000 for the Legacy of Leadership campaign. Gators and families can work together as a team or on their own, and you can be sure that the competition will be fierce. Already Xavier graduates of the classes of the 80s have said that they challenge the classes of the 90s to beat them....

To that, the class of 90s have said- BRING IT ON!

And the youngest of the gators.....have yet to chime in. Will the classes of the 00-08, be up for the challenge or will the zero truly be their hero? Stay tuned to find out!

XAVIER COLLEGE PREPARATORY HONORED BY ARIZONA INTERSCHOLASTIC ASSOCIATION WITH H.A. HENDRICKSON AWARD

XAVIER COLLEGE PREPARATORY HONORED BY ARIZONA INTERSCHOLASTIC ASSOCIATION WITH H.A. HENDRICKSON AWARD

Xavier College Preparatory, the all-girl Catholic high school established in 1943 in Phoenix, has been honored by the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) Executive Board with the 2008-09 H.A. Hendrickson Award for overall excellence in interscholastic competition in the 4A and 5A divisions. Xavier is the first single-sex high school ever to receive this award.

One high school winner is chosen per year, per conference (1A to 5A), to receive the award based on the AIA Overall Excellence Point System for athletics, music and speech. Xavier is part of the 5A conference, the largest and most competitive conference. Points are awarded for athletic state, runner-up and regional championships; superior ratings at regional music festivals; speech and debate sweepstakes and runner-up championships; sportsmanship; game management; and number of activities in which students participate.

In the 2008-09 school year, Xavier won state championships in Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, Swimming & Diving and Volleyball, and state runner-up in Track & Field and Spiritline. Xavier won region championships in Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, Spiritline, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Track and Volleyball. Xavier’s Honor Choir and other competitive academic participation also brought this award to Xavier.

“For an all-girl high school to win this award, especially with the other 5A high schools having both boy and girl teams competing to win 5A state tournaments, is a great tribute to Xavier coaches, student athletes, parents, administration and fans,” said Sister Lynn Winsor, BVM, CMAA, Xavier’s Vice Principal for Activities and Athletics. “We are thrilled and honored that, for the first time in Xavier’s 66-year history, we have demonstrated that girls empowered to achieve excellence can obtain such a prestigious award.”

The AIA also awarded Xavier its Blue Cup Award in 2006 for excellence in scholastics, athletics and activities. Xavier offers students the opportunity for involvement in 24 athletic teams and an additional 81 clubs and school-sponsored activities.

Xavier College Preparatory is twice recognized as a U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, and recognized nationally for academic excellence by the Catholic High School Honor Roll in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Xavier was awarded the 2007-08 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement, honoring high schools with high student success rates in AP math, science and technology courses. All Xavier graduates attend post-secondary institutions; members of the Class of 2009 were accepted at 212 colleges and universities, earning over $23 million in college scholarships.
